Krofft Brothers, The

Entry updated 10 May 2024. Tagged: TV, People.

The Canadian puppeteer siblings Marty Krofft (1937-2023) and Sid Krofft (1929-    ), of Greek/Hungarian origin with birth names Moshopopoulos and Cydus Yolas, were responsible for several well-remembered children's Television series. These began with The Banana Splits (1968-1970) for Hanna-Barbera – starring the titular puppet rock group – followed by their own puppet Fantasy series H.R. Pufnstuf (1969). The characteristic campiness was enhanced by vivid, almost psychedelic colours and offbeat, low-budget special effects. As Sid & Marty Krofft Television Productions and Krofft Entertainment the brothers created further genre shows given entries in this encyclopedia, such as the Dinosaur-themed Land of the Lost (1974-1977; revived 1991-1992) – with David Gerrold as an uncredited co-creator – Far Out Space Nuts (1975-1976) and the relatively weak The Lost Saucer (1975). The live-action variety series The Krofft Supershow (1976-1978) was divided into multiple segments, some of which were spun off as standalone series: these include the Miniaturization-themed Dr Shrinker (1976), the female Superhero vehicle Electra Woman and Dyna Girl (1976) and the cryptid adventure sequence Bigfoot and Wildboy (1977-1979).
