Aliens invade a small town to kill humans and use them as a meat-source in a new galactic fast-food franchise, but the Invasion is defeated, in this deliberately tasteless (hence the title) low-budget New Zealand Parody of sf and Splatter Movies. It is in the same undergraduate, disgusting vein as Big Meat Eater (1982) and the Horror film The Evil Dead (1982) – drinking vomit, eating live brains – but made much later and less proficiently. Bad Taste is amateurish (made over four years at weekends), derivative and only occasionally funny. A better made, but horribly emetic, film from the same director is Braindead (1992), but this, a bloodsoaked farce about Zombies, is only marginally science fiction. Jackson went on to work with larger budgets, and to achieve greater fame, with the three Lord of the Rings films (2001-2003) and with a remake of King Kong (2005). [PN/AR]
