Working name of UK-born author Beatrice Lilian Baldwin (1920-    ), in New Zealand from 1956 or earlier, who later specialized in gardening books. Her sf novel for Robert Hale Limited, The Red Dust (1965), is set in her adopted country and deals with a typical Antipodean theme (compare Nevil Shute's On the Beach [1957]): the far-reaching Disaster originating in the Northern hemisphere, whose consequences eventually embroil Southern climes. This time it is red dust. [JC]
