(1968-    ) US author of the Near Future Dystopian Veracity (2009 ebook), set in a post-Disaster world dominated by a right-wing male tyranny known as the Confederation of the Willing, whose control over the lives of its oppressed citizens focuses particularly on women (see Feminism; Women in SF). The Confederation's obsessional control over even uttering a forbidden word – an implanted chip, when a forbidden word is spoken, gives the offender an electrical shock – may seem an over-simple rendering of the nightmarish state envisioned by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949); but the protagonist is a rounded figure, and her anguish and resistance when her daughter's name is forbidden are capably narrated.
