Campbell, Alice

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.

(1887-1955) US-born author, in Europe from early adulthood and in the UK from around 1919, active as a writer until 1950; most of her works are detective fictions, though her first, Juggernaut (1928), filmed as Juggernaut (1936) directed Henry Edwards and starring Boris Karloff, has some sf interest: Karloff plays a Scientist driven to murder in order to complete his Invention of a cure for paralysis and other conditions. Desire to Kill (1934) features a villain based on Aleister Crowley [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] who feeds degenerates a Drug which utterly de-inhibits them: murders and other forms of unacceptable behaviour are the outcome.
