Castle of Frankenstein

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.

US letter-size saddle-stapled Media Magazine printed on newsprint. Published by Gothic Castle Publishing Company Incorporated. Editors included Calvin T Beck, Larry Ivie and Bhob Stewart. 25 issues 1962 to 1975 plus one Annual edition. Publication, though nominally quarterly, was very erratic.

This is widely considered the best of the US Monster Movies magazines, eclipsing Famous Monsters of Filmland. It offered a more mature look at the field than any of its competitors. Books and Comics were also covered: there were book reviews by Lin Carter and Charles M Collins, and regular artwork by well-known artists such as Hannes Bok, Virgil Finlay, Wally Wood and Bernie Wrightson among many others. Further contributors included Joe Dante, William K Everson and Richard A Lupoff. Admirable work was done towards the goal of listing all films in the Fantasy, Horror and sf genres, but Castle of Frankenstein suspended publication long before this could be completed. Its last few years featured some splendid painted covers by such artists as Marcus Boas and Frank Brunner (1949-    ), which compare well to the best Pulp art.

The magazine was revived in 1996 by Dennis Druktenis Publishing in the same format (albeit with many more pages) for another twelve issues plus another Annual. This revival was of good quality in its own right, featuring many surviving authors who had contributed to the first incarnation, but failed to become a lasting success. Druktenis continues to reprint occasional past issues. [GSt/DRL]
