Chubbchubbs, The

Entry updated 27 April 2020. Tagged: Film.

US short animated film (2002). Sony Pictures Imageworks. Directed by Eric Armstrong. Written by Jeff Wolverton. Voice cast includes Brad Simonsen and Jeff Wolverton. 6 Minutes. Colour.

Fired and kicked out of the Alien karaoke bar where he worked as the janitor, Meeper (Simonsen) is warned by another alien that "the Chubbchubbs are coming" – and, indeed, Monsters can be seen approaching. The bar clientele flee; Meeper notices some cute little birdlike creatures and tries to persuade them to leave too – but then the monsters arrive. Whereupon the birdlike creatures become uncute, displaying numerous rows of teeth, and make short work of the monsters: for they are the Chubbchubbs (Wolverton). They subsequently accompany Meeper as his karaoke backing singers, ensuring the audience are suitably appreciative.

This amiable but minor comedy drops references to E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Alien (1979), Star Wars (1977) and other sf media along the way. Released with Men in Black II (2002) (see Men in Black) and then with Stuart Little 2 (2002), it went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film of 2002.

A sequel, The ChubbChubbs Save Xmas (2007), accompanied the non-genre Daddy Day Camp (2007 vt Daddy Day Care 2). [SP]
