(1959-    ) Australian writer, editor, critic, bookseller and publisher, married to Michelle Marquardt, who founded the Small Press MirrorDanse Books in 1994. Before this he had had several stories published, starting with "Collector" in Aphelion for Summer 1986/1987, and had edited various Anthologies, the first being Intimate Armageddons (anth 1992). Of particular note is the Year's Best Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy series which ran for four years between 2005 and 2008, with a fifth volume appearing in 2010. It won a Ditmar Award for the 2006 edition. Michelle Marquardt co-edited the first four volumes of the series, with Congreve alone credited as editor of the fifth. As a critic and reviewer Congreve shared the William Atheling Jr Award for the 1995 essay "The Hunt for Australian Horror Fiction" (The Scream Factory #16) with co-authors Sean McMullen and Steve Paulsen; as a reviewer, publisher and bookseller he won an Aurealis award in 2006, and as a publisher won a further Ditmar Award in 2007 for his efforts to highlight Australian writers through MirrorDanse.
