(1881-? ) US author of many Young Adult titles in the 1920s and 1930s, some of which rationalize supernatural elements; the only titles with genuine fantasy content are written for younger readers. She is of sf interest primarily for her Airplane Boys sequence (see Airplane Boys), which was also published – simultaneously or soon after – as the Flying Buddies sequence, or the Sky Larking Comrades sequence as by M Delmore Marquith. These various forms of series title, and the assorted variant titles and pseudonyms used to differentiate them, are difficult to sort; we are deeming the Airplane Boys titles to precede, on little evidence beyond the fact that her own name is used on this iteration, and because the later titles are published solely under this rubric; we are not presuming that the Marquith titles follow later, though there is some evidence that they do. Over the course of the series, the lads encounter, and make use of in their exploits, various Inventions well in advance of historical reality; Lost Races are discovered, as well as the occasional conspiracy against world civilization, which they thwart.
