Cyclops, The

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Film.

Film (1957). B&H Productions/Allied Artists Pictures. Produced and directed by Bert I Gordon. Written by Gordon. Staring Gloria Talbott, James Craig, Tom Drake, Lon Chaney, Duncan "Dean" Parkin. Special make-up by Jack Young. Voice effects by Paul Frees. 66 minutes. Black and white.

Susan Winters (Talbott) is determined to find her fiancé, Bruce Barton, who vanished in Mexico while prospecting for uranium some six months before the film starts. Promising any uranium they find to wealthy mining expert "Marty" Melville (Chaney), she puts together a search team which includes guide Russ Bradford (Craig), and pilot Lee Brand (Drake). Finding their way to the valley Barton was investigating when he crashed, they land and are almost immediately attacked by various animals turned into giants (see Great and Small) by the high radiation levels. Most wish to leave once temporary safety is gained, but Winters refuses. They soon find a cave in which dwells a 25-foot tall Mutant humanoid (Parkin) with a single eye and deformed face. This hostile Cyclops battles them for a time; when finally killed, he is revealed to be the missing Barton. The party leaves, with Susan now realizing that Bradford is in love with her.

As in Indestructible Man (1956), Lon Chaney again had minimal dialogue because of difficult in recalling his lines owing to his well-known struggle with alcoholism during this period. [GSt]
