Event, The

Entry updated 10 November 2023. Tagged: TV.

US tv series (2010-2011). Created by Nick Wauters. Producers include Jeffrey Reiner and Steve Stark. Directors include Reiner and Milan Cheylov. Writers include Wauters, Vanessa Rojas, Jay Beattie, and Lisa Zwerling. Cast includes Jason Ritter as Sean Walker, Sarah Roemer as Leila Buchanan, Blair Underwood as President Elias Martinez, Zeljko Ivanek as Blake Sterling, Ian Anthony Dale as Simon Lee, Laura Innes as Sophia Maguire, Scott Patterson as Michael Buchanan, and Clifton Collins Jr as Thomas. 22 one-hour episodes.

Positioned as the successor to Lost (2004-2010), and the first in a long line of short-lived series so positioned to air after the juggernaut show had been put to rest in the spring of 2010, The Event, which pits a group of human-looking Aliens who have been living clandestinely on Earth for decades against both the US government and a shadowy civilian group intent on exploiting the aliens, and their half-human children, for its own ends, has squandered its ready-made audience and strong network backing by delivering a tedious, ill-conceived story. The plots are self-contradictory and driven by the characters' stupidity or incompetence, the dialogue is stilted, and the acting is sub-par despite the presence of several game and gifted performers in the cast. In late 2010, the show was placed on extended hiatus so that its creators could retool it and make another bid for commercial success; there was little evidence of retooling, however, when the show returned in Spring 2011, and it continued to haemorrhage viewers. It was cancelled after a single season. [AN]
