(1977- ) Canadian journalist and author who began to publish work of genre interest with "A Pair of Ragged Claws" in Black Treacle for March/April 2013. Her first novel, Armed in Her Fashion (2018) is a fantasy set in fourteenth-century northern Europe involving revenants and Shapeshifters and strong women; an earlier novella, The Course of True Love (2016 ebook), is set in a fantasy world based primarily on William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (performed circa 1595; 1600). Heartfield is of sf interest for the Alice Payne sequence of Steampunk-inflected Time Travel tales comprising Alice Payne Arrives (2018) and Alice Payne Rides (2019); as the narrative begins to sort the usual complications involved in time travel, a Changewar scenario becomes visible. Payne herself, a strongly drawn figure (see Women in SF), copes ably with the world and some entanglements – not unexpected in a tale involving time travel – with her extended but intimate family.
