Directors included Lawrence Trilling, Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, Steve Schill, Thomas Schlamme. Writers included Michael Alaimo, Juan Carlos Coto, Becky Hartman Edwards, Julie Siege. Cast includes Eddie Cibrian, William Fichtner, Tyler Labine and Kari Matchett. 22 55-minute episodes. Colour.

In the fictional coastal town of Homestead, Florida, near a Federal Nature preserve, strange lights descend from the sky just before a hurricane. The storm devastates the town and brings with it strange luminescent sea creatures strongly implied to be Aliens. The creatures begin infecting people who are then usually replaced through a kind of Cloning, although this takeover is not always successful. Park ranger Russell Varon (Cibrian) investigates the lights and the changes in many people, while Sheriff Tom Underlay (Fichtner) quarantines the town. The sheriff's wife Mariel (Matchett) is a marine biologist who also investigates;, both the Underlays and the Varons have children to worry about. As the series progresses, it grows increasingly clear that some faction in the US military – which arrived soon after the storm – is aware of the unknown beings and their activities. A second hurricane strikes in the final episode, severely injuring the Sheriff, and leaving the series to finish on a cliffhanger with almost all questions yet unresolved.

Invasion was one of several series – Threshold (2005) is another example – which unsuccessfully imitated Lost (2004-2010) with very long story arcs and large casts of characters whose back-stories gradually emerge. Invasion ratings steadily declined after its debut, leading to cancellation after one season. The programme has been issued to the home video market. [GSt]
