(1964-    ) Canadian television and film producer, screenwriter and author, in the USA from about 1990, when he began writing and producing various television segments, episodes and films, sometimes acting simultaneously in both capacities. Among these productions were several of genre interest, including the Universal Soldier (1992) sequels Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms (1998) and Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business (1998), as writer; Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2000) as co-writer and co-executive producer; Level 9 (2000) as writer and producer; and XIII (2008) as co-producer. In Cinema he co-scripted Demolition Man (1993) directed by Marco Brambilla.

Of direct sf interest is a Graphic Novel, Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained (2002 Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained #1-#4; graph 2003) with Frazer Irving, set at the very end of the nineteenth century in New York, where Charles Fort aids an Alien who has come to Earth in order to expunge a deadly viral Monster from the stars; the Statue of Liberty figures prominently as a highly ambivalent icon: facing into the new century, but harbouring monsters. R.I.P.D. (1999-2000 R.I.P.D. #1-#4; graph 2013) with Lucas Marangon and Randy Emberlin, a supernatural fantasy about the tough afterlife police of the Rest In Peace Department (see Crime and Punishment), was filmed as R.I.P.D. (2013) directed by Robert Schwentke. [JC/DRL]
