Sonin, Ray

Entry updated 12 August 2018. Tagged: Author.

Working name of UK scriptwriter, journalist, radio broadcaster and author Zola Sonin (1907-1991), in Canada from 1957. He published several nonfantastic thrillers, and is of sf interest for his contribution to the "Space" Kingley Shared World sequence, The Adventures of Captain "Space" Kingley (coll 1952), which enjoyably presents standard-fare Space Opera for children. There is an unconfirmed claim that Sonin was the first broadcaster in North America to play a Beatles song, "Love Me Do" in December 1962 – presumably after acquiring the record during one of his frequent trips to England, as it had not yet been released across the Atlantic. He was made a member of the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1984. [JC]
