StarShipSofa

Entry updated 13 December 2015. Tagged: Publication.

UK-based weekly Audiozine run by Tony C Smith which began on 20 December 2007. It began with simple readings of stories, professionally recorded and downloadable, posted weekly, but the site has since expanded to include videos, downloadable anthologies and a host of other interactive media. Some of the stories are originals, but the majority are previously published material by major writers, Michael Moorcock being one of the most popular; others include Kage Baker, Elizabeth Bear, Michael Bishop, David Brin, Cory Doctorow, Stephen R Donaldson, China Miéville, Brian Stableford, Bruce Sterling, Charles Stross, John Varley, Ian Watson and Peter Watts, to name just a few authors of the over 260 stories broadcast up to October 2012. Most stories are recorded by independent readers but some by their actual authors.

The popularity of the podcast was proved when the website won a Hugo award in the Fanzine category in 2010. Smith has compiled two anthologies of stories which have been broadcast, StarShipSofa Volume 1 (anth 2009 ebook) and Volume 2 (anth 2010 ebook) plus a volume transcribing the discussions Smith and others have had about various authors and the History of SF, StarShipSofa: The Captain's Logs (anth 2010).
