Super Friends

Entry updated 11 March 2024. Tagged: TV.

Animated tv series (1973). Hanna-Barbera Productions for ABC-TV. Creative producer: Iwo Takamoto. Directed by Charles A Nichols. Writers included Bernie Kahn, Fred Freiberger, Ken Rotcop and Marshall Williams. Based on the Comic Justice League of America (see Justice League of America). Cast includes Sherry Alberoni, Norman Alden, Danny Dark, Olan Soule and Frank Welker. Narrator: Ted Knight. Sixteen 60-minute episodes. Colour.

The greatest – DC Comics Superheroes, Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman – team up as the Super Friends operating out of the Hall of Justice. Each episode begin with an emergency of some sort reported via the team's Trouble-Alert Computer, generally involving various Supervillains, although Alien Invasions and natural Disasters also crop up. US Army officer Colonel Wilcox occasionally appears as the team's liaison to the US government. Also regularly featured were teenage superheroes-in-training Weny (Alberoni) and Marvin (Welker); an especially annoying original character was Wonder Dog, an intelligent canine who assisted the heroes in their adventures. More juvenile in tone than later animated series featuring some of the characters, this first incarnation of Super Friends lasted only one season.

Beginning a few years later, however, several variously titled revivals followed: The All-New Super Friends Hour (1977-1978; vt Super Friends II); Challenge of the Superfriends (1978; vt Super Friends III); The World's Greatest SuperFriends (1979-1980; vt Super Friends IV); Super Friends (1980-1983; season 1 vt Super Friends V, season 2 vt Super Friends VI); Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984-1985; vt Super Friends VII); and The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985; vt Super Friends VIII).
