Good to see that
the Guardian story about John Crowley's new translation of
The Chemical Wedding
(1616) by Johann Valentin Andreae quotes our very
own John Clute and links to the
relevant SF Encyclopedia entry. But to call this work "the
first ever science fiction novel" is to pick just one of all too
many possibilities in the vast realm that's outlined in the
SFE entry for Proto SF. It's
