(1960-2026) US author, born David M Friedman, who served in the US Navy in the 1980s and whose Welsh-sounding adopted name ["David son of Hugh"] was legalized. He began to publish work of genre interest with the fantasy novel Heroing: or, How He Wound Down the World (1987) and was perhaps best known for his novella, "The Coon Rolled Down and Ruptured his Larinks, a Squeezed Novel by Mr. Skunk" in Asimov's for August 1990. This is a striking Post-Holocaust tale whose linguistic invention recalls Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker (1980), but which is altogether more graphic in its effects. The Arthur War Lord sequence, comprising Arthur War Lord (1994) and Far Beyond the Wave (1994), is sf with a fantasy coloration. This features the adventures of a man who, via Time Travel convention, chases a female CIA agent into Arthurian times, where she is attempting to assassinate the king, and thus to change history.
Most of ab Hugh's work consists of Ties, including four Doom Videogame novelizations written in collaboration with Brad Linaweaver and beginning with Knee-Deep in the Dead (1995), which takes its title from the first segment of the original Doom game released in 1993.
