Atom Squad

Entry updated 10 November 2023. Tagged: TV.

Juvenile tv series (1953-1954). NBC-TV. Produced by Larry White and Adrian Samish. Directed by Joe Behar. Written by Paul Monash. Cast includes Robert Courtleigh, Bob Hastings, Bram Nossen and Harrison Sheppard. 142 15-minute episodes. Black and white.

The Atom Squad is a top-secret organization protecting the USA from various Cold War-era threats involving radiation or Nuclear Energy, often as the result of sabotage, attacks from Communist spies or the doings of Mad Scientists, though visiting Aliens are also encountered on three occasions. The Squad operates from a secret base in New York. Its Scientist team leader is Steve Elliott (Courtleigh); his main assistant is Dave Fielding (Hastings) and their superior is known simply as The Chief (Nossen). Steve's young brother Jimmy Elliot (Sheppard) usually finds a way to insert himself into adventures.

Atom Squad was filmed live and is thought to have been recorded on kinescopes in daily 15-minute instalments whose serial storylines could run from five to ten parts. Unfortunately, as with many early Television programmes, no copies are known to survive; these were presumably lost or wiped for re-use. Existing documentation indicates that like much early-1950s US Television the series was filmed on the East Coast, in this case Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. No Tie merchandise is known to exist.
