(1983- ) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with "The Cowboy's Wife" in Zahir for Summer 2009, as Cassandra Clarke; her Assassin's Curse sequence beginning with The Assassin's Curse (2012) is fantasy, heavy with adventures. She is of sf interest for some individual titles. The Mad Scientist's Daughter (2013) is set in a Near Future America which has suffered survived depopulation, seemingly due to Climate Change and other Disasters; the protagonist's father, who is not a genuine Mad Scientist, has her brought up in the company of an AI-driven Android. Though mutually affected by Uncanny Valley effects, the two fall in love, after a fashion. Star's End (2017) sophisticatedly combines Space Opera and family romance topoi: the protagonist must attempt to find her three sisters and reconcile them with her morally-repugnant father, owner of a small planet plus four Terraformed moons, where Genetically Engineered mercenaries are bred for sale in foreign wars. The plot is further complicated by an First Contact event, at which point decisions, of an ethical complexity that marks the tale off from much space opera, must be taken. [JC]
