(1951- ) US author, some of whose books have been published as by Mike Conner, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Extinction of Confidence, the Exercise of Honesty" for New Constellations (anth 1976) edited by Thomas M Disch and Charles Naylor (1942-2005). He later won a 1992 Nebula for "Guide Dog" (May 1991 F&SF) as by Mike Connor [sic: erroneously so listed in the magazine contents]. Conner's first novel, I Am Not the Other Houdini (1978; vt The Houdini Directive 1989), is a burlesque flirtation with apocalypse set in California in the twenty-first century. Groupmind (1984) is less eccentric; but Eye of the Sun (1988), told with the genre-mixing abundance of many Planetary Romances, follows the careening adolescence of three royal children as their Far-Future world totters into a religious crisis which threatens a long-sustained matriarchy. Archangel (1995) is an Alternate History set in a noir 1920s Minneapolis, in a world radically transformed by a plague which affects whites but not Blacks; the protagonist must search for a Vampire who is somehow implicated in these events.
