(1955- ) Australian author whose first novel, Oceana Fine (1989), is set in a surreal version of modern Australia, too fantasticated to be a genuine Alternate World but at the same time hauntingly verisimilitudinous. A vast grain elevator houses the eponymous new wheat strain; the elevator becomes a cathedral and the wheat becomes manna. Much of the action takes place in a constantly mutating system of Labyrinths. The End of the World may be nigh. [JC]
