Metaphorosis

Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Publication.

US monthly Online Magazine, first issue January 2016. Edited by B Morris Allen. Stories are published weekly online, then collected in monthly ebooks and (since July 2018) paperbacks; there are also annual collections reprinting the relevant year's tales. Each issue comprises 4-5 science fiction or fantasy stories, except for December 2017, which had 6: they are usually short stories, occasionally novelettes, rarely novellas.

Stories are, at worse, adequate; at best, very good. Yaroslav Barsukov's serialized "Tower of Mud and Straw" (September-December 2020) was a 2020 Nebula finalist in the novella category, whilst "Superbloom" (January 2021) by Lynne Peskoe-Yang was on the shortlist for Utopian Short Story in the inaugural Utopia Awards. Other authors publishing notable work include Matthew Amundsen, Ted S. Bushman, Peter T Donahue, MJ Gardner, Damien Krsteski, Tomas Marcantonio, Devin Miller, L'Erin Ogle, Lynne Peskoe-Yang, Chloe Smith, Pablo Valcarcel and Kathryn Weaver. Many of these had their first or second stories published by Metaphorosis – which reflects one of the magazine's virtues, introducing new writers. [SP]
