(1957-    ) US scientist, journalist and author, best known for a wide range of nonfiction texts in which narrative illustrations from Mathematics and Biology and other sciences are used to stimulate the creativity and to awaken the urge to numeracy in his readers. These include Computers, Pattern, Chaos, and Beauty (1990) (see Computers), Chaos in Wonderland: Visual Adventures in a Fractal World (1994), Black Holes: A Traveler's Guide (1996) (see Black Holes), Time: A Traveler's Guide (1998) (see Time), The Science of Aliens (1998) (see Aliens), Dreaming of the Future: The Fantastic Story of Prediction (2001) (see Futures Studies; Prediction), and others.

Pickover's fiction includes Spider Legs (1998) with Piers Anthony; and the Neo-Reality sequence – comprising Liquid Earth (2002), The Lobotomy Club (2002), Sushi Never Sleeps (2002) and Egg Drop Soup (2002) – in which dramatized scientific issues are presented in the form of Thought Experiments.
