Radiohead

Entry updated 21 August 2012. Tagged: Music.

UK rock group from the Oxford area. Their early work is recognizable, if high quality, "indie" rock, haunted by and expressive of contemporary anomie and angst. But the band's third album OK Computer (1997) exaggerated this individual sense of despair into a coherent and powerful Dystopian vision. Douglas Adams' The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the source of the title of the album as a whole and also of some of its tracks (for instance "Paranoid Android"), but the mood of the whole is very far removed from Adams's whimsical hilarity. The imagined world of OK Computer is grittily horrible, beginning and ending with a car crash, portraying existence as deracinated and destructively mechanized. [AR]
