Working name of US journalist and author Ann Margaret Shriver (1957- ), in London for several years; among her earlier nonfantastic novels the best known is We Need to Talk about Kevin (2003), about a teenage mass-murderer. The Post-Birthday World (2007) uses narrative rather than sf devices to contrast the parallel timelines of a woman's relationships with two alternative partners, somewhat in the manner of the film Sliding Doors (1998). Of direct sf interest is The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047 (2016), set in a Near Future America teetering towards collapse in a world suddenly shaken to its roots by explosive inflation, the focus of the tale being on the seemingly ungovernable rapacity of financial manipulators of the system (see Economics; Money), and on the implosion of the American economy after the dollar collapses and the government defaults on its debts.
