Starship

Entry updated 16 March 2026. Tagged: Theme.

In sf Terminology, a ship capable of travel between the Stars – one of the many sf neologisms which have passed into the language. The term itself seems to have been first used in a context of Spiritualism in Oahspe (1882) by J B Newbrough, where it is hyphenated as "star-ship"; the first known unhyphenated appearance is in the 16 October 1926 instalment of Raymond Quiex's Space Opera serial "The War in Space" (24 July-23 October 1926 Boys' Magazine).

Various aspects of such spacecraft are discussed in the following SFE entries: Faster Than Light; Generation Starships; Hyperspace; Relativity; Spaceships; Suspended Animation; World Ships. [PN/DRL]
