Voivod

Entry updated 3 May 2024. Tagged: Music.

Canadian metal band formed in 1982, and still active through numerous line-up changes; the band name has also been spelt Voïvod. Most of their albums have sf-themed songs, beginning with Killing Technology (1987). The title track is a warning over space Weaponry, while "Forgotten in Space" is a bleak tale of a Prison Spaceship. Dimension Hatröss (1988) is a concept album about a Cyborg called Korgull (also the band's mascot) from his conception in a laboratory, growing independence, and battles against technocrats and "chaosmongers". "Space Drama" continues the weapons-in -pace theme. The album exemplifies the highly technically proficient mix of speed metal and prog tendencies that they specialize in, exhilarating to many, exhausting to others. Further sf lyrics include "Time Warp" from The Outer Limits (1993), about a time traveller (see Time Travel) about to embark on a journey "between the cracks"; "Project X" from Negatron (1995), about a spaceship escaping the imminent destruction of Earth; the self-explanatory "Rebel Robot" and "The Multiverse" from Voivod (2003), which also contains "Les Cigares Volants" about UFOs and the Disaster-in-space tale "Invisible Planet"; and the title track of Target Earth (2016), whose narrator boasts "I am the god eraser / I am the planet killer". There are numerous other examples throughout their extensive discography. [CWa]
