(1969-    ) US author who began publishing work of genre interest with "Mixing Rebecca" for The Silver Web, issue 13 1996, and whose first solo novel A Shadow in Summer (2006) – opening The Long Price Quartet – is fantasy, like most of his work. As M L N Hanover he wrote the Black Suns' Daughter sequence of Urban Fantasies (> The Encyclopedia of Fantasy) set in a noir Chicago. He collaborated with Gardner Dozois and George R R Martin on the sf Shadow Twin (2005 chap; exp vt Hunter's Run 2007), whose human Antihero is forced by Aliens to pursue (with a view to killing) his original self – for he discovers that he is a newly created Clone or Doppelganger. Some of his fiction has been assembled as Leviathan Wept and Other Stories (coll 2010). [DRL/JC]
