Applegate, K A

Tagged: Author

(1956-    ) US author of sf and fantasy for children, almost exclusively through the medium of three extended series, which include some inbuilt sub-series. She is best-known for the Animorphs sequence, beginning with Animorphs: The Invasion (1996) and ending with Animorphs: The Beginning (2001), featuring the exploits of a group of adolescent children who use their Shapeshifter powers, which have been given them in sf-like fashion by an unknown extraterrestrial technology, to oppose an invasion of parasitic slug-like Aliens known as the Yeerks. Applegate's husband Michael Grant is an uncredited collaborator on the Animorphs books.

Her second series, the Everworld sequence beginning with Everworld: Search for Senna (1999) and closing with Everworld: Entertain the End (2001), is fantasy. Her third series, the Remnants sequence beginning with Remnants 1: The Mayflower Project (2001) and ending with Remnants 14: Begin Again (2003), places its crew of adolescent children, who are among the 80 survivors, in a space shuttle after an asteroid strikes Earth (see Disaster; Post-Holocaust); the shuttle is picked up by a great World Ship called Mother, home to various waif species, where their adventures, which are often grim, move towards a resolution when an entity or energy fount known as the Source will judge and/or redirect the living.

Applegate's only singleton, The One and Only Ivan (2012) as Katherine Applegate, is a strong Apes as Human tale narrated by a gorilla trapped in a Zoo; the tale is based on a true story. [JC]
