(1955-    ) US author, initially of the fantasy Averidan series, as B W Clough, beginning with The Crystal Crown (1984), and latterly of the Suburban Gods sequence, comprising How Like a God (1997) and Doors of Death and Life (2000), in which occult fantasy consorts, not entirely easily, with Near Future sf as Gilgamesh's Pearl of Immortality passes from Edwin Barbarossa (who retains his Immortality) to the protagonist, whose Psi Powers are called into use after his homebound Spaceship blows up. The possibility of Immortality looms. An Impossumble Summer (1992) is fantasy for younger readers, but Revise the World (fixup 2009 ebook) is a Sleeper Awakes tale featuring a revived Antarctic explorer, Captain Lawrence "Titus" Oates (1880-1912), famous for his suicidal stiff-upper-lip stroll outdoors in a futile attempt to save other members of the Scott Expedition: "I am just going outside and may be some time." He awakens in the year 2045, where – singularly unfit for an urbanized Near Future environment – he becomes embroiled in a First Contact scenario involving Aliens who may be inimical. [JC]
