(1975-    ) UK author, mostly of nonfiction, which although extremely various does not engage in the realms of the fantastic; active from the early 1990s. His first work of fiction, Help the Witch (coll 2018), is a collection of ghost stories. He is of sf interest for his first novel Villager (coll of linked stories/fixup 2022), whose interwoven and sometimes generically conflicting narratives (see Fantastika) extend from the primordial beginnings of the village of Underhill in somewhere like Dartmoor (see Prehistoric SF) to a Near Future 2099 beset by Climate Change but surviving. The stories of Underhill are told by men and women and at least one chthonic spiritus loci. There is some sense that human life, in this place and planetwide, may be nearing its end. [JC]
