(1956-    ) US comic book writer and author, two of whose earlier series – the Photon sequence, beginning with Photon #1: For the Glory (1987), and the Psi-Man sequence, beginning with Psi-Man: Mind-Force Warrior (1990), about a Quaker fighter for good – are signed David Peters. As David he has mainly produced fantasies like the Modern Arthur sequence, beginning with Knight Life (1987; rev 2002), in which Arthur is put into the modern world; Howling Mad: A Tale of Relenting Horror (1989) is a comical singleton; he has also produced film Ties like The Return of Swamp Thing (1989), The Rocketeer (1991) and Alien Nation: Body and Soul (1993), tied to a cancelled television series. Most of his production has been various Star Trek Ties (see Star Trek) beginning with Star Trek: The Next Generation: Strike Zone (1989) [for a very rough breakdown of its 40 or more successors, see Checklist below]. David is a sometimes ruthlessly competent author of shared-universe fiction; but his work overall is noted for its humour and for a humane (and essentially non-violent) take on the world. Unlike some of his colleagues in this type of enterprise, where military actions tend to dominate, he does not seem to be a War Lover. In 2011 he received the Grandmaster Scribe Award for career achievement in media Ties. [JC]
