(1963-    ) Canadian author who began publishing work of genre interest with "Payback Tattoo" for Pulphouse: The Hardback Magazine #9, Fall 1990, and whose first novel, The Quicksilver Screen (1992), somewhat clumsily posits twenty-first-century Television as opening genuine portals in Alternate Worlds. The Cyber-myth sequence mixes American Mythology of the Tall Tale variety [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] and Near Future conflicts: in Steeldriver (1998), a Cyborg who channels John Henry combats a mining machine in order to gain his freedom (see Race in SF); and in Timberjak (1999), Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed (1774-1845) are channelled into an Ecological conflict with implications of Climate Change. V.I. (2000) is a Space Opera whose crippled protagonist finds viral intelligence (see Hive Minds) behind the Disaster has devastated an Alien planet. DeBrandt has also written scripts for Comics, including contributions to the Spider-Man universe. His work is sometimes hastily couched, detracting at times from the vividness of his concepts. [JC]
