(1976-    ) UK author whose very Young Adult Pirates! sequence beginning with The Pirates!: An Adventure with Scientists (2004), spoofishly but entertainingly engages an incompetent pirate band – whose banter shows the influence of Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974) – in various adventures back and forth throughout the nineteenth century, as seen through a Steampunk lens. In the first tale they encounter Charles Darwin and some Monsters; in others various Iconic entities from Napoléon Bonaparte to Herman Melville's Moby-Dick; in the last tale, The Pirates!: In an Adventure with the Romantics; Or, Prometheus versus a Terrible Fungus (2012), they encounter Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley at the Villa Diodati, with the Frankenstein Monster about to heave into view. Defoe's contribution to the Shared World based on the Massively Multiplayer Online Game Elite Dangerous is Elite: Docking Is Difficult (2014). [JC]
