(?   -    ) Australian author and IT consultant whose novels are all marketed as fantasy. This accurately describes her debut Demon Child trilogy beginning with Medalon (2000). However, the Second Sons trilogy – comprising The Lion of Senet (2002), Eye of the Labyrinth (2003) and Lord of the Shadows (2003) is set on what is evidently a planetary colony, with a Planetary Romance ambience. As in Anne McCaffrey's Pern, the medievalistic society has forgotten its Earthly origins. Fantastic elements are confined to mildly exotic Drugs and a quirk of local Astronomy whereby one of the two Suns regularly appears to vanish for a long interval, bringing a hardship-laden "Age of Shadows". The scientific actuality is deliberately obscured by a cynical fake Religion which prescribes orgies (> Sex) and sacrifices. For the young hero, the key to enlightenment and Conceptual Breakthrough is his talent for Mathematics, although the narrative emphasis is on tortuous Politics. [DRL]
