(1935-    ) UK author who became a schoolteacher and preacher, an occupation to which he returned after the end of his fiction-writing career. From 1954 to 1965 Fanthorpe was an sf writer of remarkable productivity, towards the end of that period producing novels on a weekly schedule for Badger Books, an imprint of John Spencer and Co, work-for-hire for which he was paid £22.50 per 45,000-word volume, dictating his tales into a battery of tape-recorders for transcription by members of his family or by friends. The rushed endings of many of his novels were a result of this practice, as he often did not know how close he was to his allotted word-length until batches of typing had been completed; if a tale had reached its length while still in mid-plot, it would be truncated forthwith; other passages, composed when he was running short and comprising reiterated narrative and sentence fragments, sound (when read aloud) like a particularly dire form of oral poetry. It has been claimed of Fanthorpe that for the years in which he wrote, chiefly 1958 to 1965, he was the world's most prolific writer in the genre.

His first story, written at the age of 16, was "Worlds without End" for Futuristic Science Stories #6 in 1952 as by Lionel Roberts. His first novel, Menace from Mercury (1954), was published under the House Name Victor La Salle; other House Names under which he would work were John E Muller and Karl Zeigfreid. Within a few years he was responsible for the vast majority of Badger's sf and supernatural output, both novels and collections of stories, some of the former and all of the latter being included in the numbered series Supernatural Stories. After John Spencer and Co folded, Fanthorpe fell silent, though he made a brief comeback as a fiction writer with The Black Lion (1979; rev 2017), written in collaboration with his wife, Patricia Fanthorpe (1938-    ); it is a not-unsuccessful Science Fantasy, the first of the projected Derl Wothor trilogy whose surtitle is an anagram of "other world". This was eventually completed with The Golden Tiger (2013 ebook; rev 2017) and Zotala the Priest (2013 ebook; rev 2017); there is an element of intentional allegory in that the protagonist of the first volume represents ambition; the second, hedonism; and the third, Altruism.

Meanwhile Fanthorpe has continued to produce copious nonfiction, chiefly examinations of real-world mysteries or alleged mysteries (sometimes in the spirit of Charles Fort), again in collaboration with Patricia Fanthorpe, and – in his capacity as a vicar – devotional and inspirational chapbooks.

From the earlier work, one series of some interest – published under the Bron Fane pseudonym in Supernatural Stories – chronicles the adventures of the Bull-Dog Drummond-like Val Stearman (see Sapper) and the immortal La Noire: "The Seance" (1958 Supernatural Stories #14), "The Secret Room" (1958 Supernatural Stories #17), "Valley of the Vampire" (1958 Supernatural Stories #20), "The Silent Stranger" (1959 Supernatural Stories #21), "The Other Line" (1959), "The Green Cloud" (1959), "Pursuit" (1959), "Jungle of Death" (1959 Supernatural Stories #23), "The Crawling Fiend" (1960 Supernatural Stories #30), "Curtain Up" (1960 Supernatural Stories #33), "The Secret of the Lake" (1960 Supernatural Stories #37), "The Loch Ness Terror" (1960 Supernatural Stories #38) (see Loch Ness Monster), "The Deathless Wings" (1961 Supernatural Stories #39), "The Green Sarcophagus" (1961 Supernatural Stories #41), "Black Abyss" (1961 Supernatural Stories #43), "Forbidden City" (1961 Supernatural Stories #47), "The Secret of the Pyramid" (1961 Supernatural Stories #49), "Something at the Door" (1961 Supernatural Stories #51), "Forbidden Island" (1962 Supernatural Stories #53), "Storm God's Fury" (1962 Supernatural Stories #55), "Vengeance of the Poltergeist" (1962 Supernatural Stories #57), "The Persian Cavern" (1962 Supernatural Stories #59), "Chasm of Time" (1962 Supernatural Stories #61), "The Voice in the Wall" (1962 Supernatural Stories #65), "Cry in the Night" (1962 Supernatural Stories #67), "The Nine Green Men" (1963 Supernatural Stories #69), "The Man Who Never Smiled" (1963 Supernatural Stories #71), "Return Ticket" (1963 Supernatural Stories #73, as "Return Fare" in contents), "The Room that Never Was" (1963 Supernatural Stories #75), "The Walker" (1963 Supernatural Stories #77), Softly By Moonlight (1963), "The Thing from Sheol" (1963 Supernatural Stories #81), "The Man Who Knew" (1963 Supernatural Stories #83), Unknown Destiny (1964), "The Warlock" (1964), The Macabre Ones (1964), "The Troll" (1964), "The Walking Shadow" (1964 Supernatural Stories #87), "The Lake Thing" (1964 Supernatural Stories #93) as by Pel Torro, "The Accursed" (1965 Supernatural Stories #97), "The Prodigy" (1965 Supernatural Stories #99), U.F.O. 517 (1965) in the SF series, "Girdle of Fear" (1965 Supernatural Stories #101), "Repeat Programme" (1966 Supernatural Stories #103) and "The Resurrected Enemy" (1966 Supernatural Stories #105).

Apart from those listed below in connection with book titles, Fanthorpe's magazine pseudonyms included Neil Balfort, Othello Baron, Oben Lerteth, Elton T Neef, Peter O'Flinn, René Rolant, Robin Tate and Deutero Spartacus. All but the last are partial anagrams of his name. "Curse of the Khan" (1966 Supernatural Stories #105), the title story of what Fanthorpe knew would be the final supernatural volume, is a Recursive romp in which he and six of his pseudonyms (several more being mentioned in passing) fight seven occult Monsters. works

Badger Books titles

We list works written as R L Fanthorpe first (as we do with other writers whose careers involve multiple pseudonyms applied almost at random; see also John Russell Fearn); in Fanthorpe's case, however, collections are listed as a single sequence for all pseudonyms (see note below). Otherwise, pseudonymous works are arranged under each pseudonym separately; pseudonyms are ordered according to the first book publication under that particular name.

Serial numbers in the Badger Books science fiction (SF) and supernatural (SN) series are noted in the comment fields.

collections

Supernatural Stories

All published in a single numbered sequence under the Supernatural Stories label, occasionally varied as Supernatural Special (though not apparently for any Fanthorpe title) or Out of This World: Supernatural Stories (used on #13, #15, #17 and #19 only). For convenience and because we think the designation fits, we here treat Supernatural Stories as the overtitle of a sequence of collections, not as a magazine. Fanthorpe's practice with stories was generally to provide all the contents of a particular issue/release, using several pseudonyms in addition to his own name, and thus creating in effect a series of collections. These collections are listed below under the story named on the cover, though in fact this title might not actually appear within (covers were generated before the stories were written); pseudonymous work by other authors occasionally appears in titles otherwise entirely written by Fanthorpe. In order to make some clear sense of this mass of work, we have here violated our normal practice of designating such books as anthologies, and we do not list them separately in this Encyclopedia.

In a further attempt to rationalize Fanthorpe's collections, we list them below in one chronology, without any attempt to sort them under pseudonyms. The list is ordered according to numbering in the publisher's SN (supernatural) sequence. Cover credit is to Fanthorpe if no "as by" pseudonym is given. In two anomalous cases, The Incredulist (coll 1954) as by Lionel Roberts (a Fanthorpe pseudonym) and Face of Evil (coll 1960), most of the content was in fact by John S Glasby but a Fanthorpe tale received cover billing and the titles are therefore listed below rather than in the Glasby entry. Fanthorpe also included stories from friends: Noel Boston in SN 30, 33, 37, 41, 43, 49, 51, 53, 57 and 61; Ernest Kemp under the Fanthorpe pseudonym Trebor Thorpe in SN 85; and Harry O Mansfield under various Fanthorpe pseudonyms in SN 77, 81, 83, 85, 87, 89, 91, 93, 95 (twice), 97, 99 and 101.
