Future Fire, The

Entry updated 19 February 2024. Tagged: Publication.

UK-based but otherwise international downloadable Online Magazine edited by Djibril Alayad. It published 21 issues from January 2005 to June 2010 and resumed publication in February 2012 after an eighteen-month hiatus. It originally proclaimed itself "New Writing in Speculative Fiction and Dark Fantasy", though most issues usually carried only one or two stories and the emphasis was on reviews, critical essays and Interviews. Later issues increased the quota of fiction with a shift towards more urban fiction, Cyberpunk and folktale. Alayad's essay "Grossly Exaggerated" (August 2006 #6) considered the premature demise of Cyberpunk.

From the start The Future Fire identified as being "interested in feminist, queer, postcolonial and ecological themes, and writing by under-represented voices". Issue #19 (January 2010) was a special Feminist sf number. [MA]
