Garland

Entry updated 10 July 2019. Tagged: Publisher.

Garland Publishing, Inc, New York, was a US specialist publisher of a wide range of reference works and facsimile reprints, founded in 1969 by Gavin Borden (1939-1991), and active in its own right until the end of the century; only some of the Garland list related to sf, beginning in 1975 with the Garland Library of Science Fiction: 45 titles, selected by Lester del Rey, each novel issued separately in durable editions. The series was criticized, partly for some idiosyncratic choices – including unexceptional novels by Stanton A Coblentz, Otto Willi Gail, H Beam Piper and George O Smith – but chiefly for the choice of inferior versions of the books to reproduce, essentially unedited; for these reasons, the series has been little used in recent decades. Del Rey's own The World of Science Fiction: 1926-1976: The History of a Subculture (1979), which appeared first from Del Rey Books and then from Garland in 1980, was a critical history intended to accompany the series.

Garland's occasional books of genre interest since that time included A Research Guide to Science Fiction Studies (1977) by L W Currey, Roger C Schlobin and Marshall B Tymn; the ten volumes of E F Bleiler's Frank Reade Library (anth 1979-1986); Science Fiction and Fantasy Series and Sequels: A Bibliography, Volume 1: Books (1986) by Tim Cottrill, Martin H Greenberg and Charles G Waugh; and two companion volumes, Horror Literature: A Reader's Guide (1990) and Fantasy Literature: A Reader's Guide (1990), both edited by Neil Barron.
