Green, Roland J
Entry updated 12 September 2022. Tagged: Author.
(1944-2021) US author whose first sale was the first volume in the Wandor Sword-and-Sorcery sequence (see listing below), though his first published work was a volume in the similar Richard Blade sequence [see Checklist below – he wrote numbers 9 through 37, with the exception of number 30] under the House Name Jeffrey Lord. His sf has generally been written in collaboration, notably two volumes in the Janissaries sequence of Military SF with Jerry Pournelle, Janissaries: Clan and Crown (1982) and Janissaries III: Storms of Victory (1988). Others include: Jamie the Red (1984) with Gordon R Dickson; a continuation of H Beam Piper's Paratime Police/Lord Kalvan books with John F Carr, Great Kings' War (1985); and The Book of Kantela (1985) with Frieda A Murray (Green's wife). The Peace Company series of Military SF novels – Peace Company (1985), These Green Foreign Hills (1987) and The Mountain Walks (1989) – are by Green alone, as is the Starcruiser Shenandoah sequence, comprising Squadron Alert (1989), Division of the Spoils (1990), The Sum of Things (1991), Vain Command (1992), The Painful Field (1993) and Warriors for the Working Day (1994). In these works, though Green's good-humoured efficiency is always evident, it is difficult to pin down any strongly individual tone. [JC]
