(1944-    ) US author whose first book, Pacific Empire (coll of linked stories 1998), begins her Pacific sequence by depicting an only modestly transformed Alternate History world in which Japan has triumphed in World War Two by attacking Pearl Harbor in 1939. The depiction of domestic lives in the postwar era is engaging. In the sequel, New Pacific (2004), Japan is seen as succumbing – just as in the world to which this is an alternative – to corporatism.
