LC-39

Entry updated 20 September 2020. Tagged: Publication.

US Semiprozine published by Launch Publications, Baltimore, Maryland and edited by Matthew Walls. It saw just three issues, undated, but from Spring 1999 to Spring 2000. The title was derived from the old NASA term for Launch Complex 39, from where all the Apollo lunar missions had been launched. Walls wanted the magazine to serve as a launch pad for new writers and at the same time represent much that was central to science fiction, the desire to explore and progress. Walls believed that too much recent science fiction was stale and he wanted to produce a more literary type of fiction: hence he styled it as a "Magazine of Science Fiction Literature". However, despite a quality if unorthodox format (8.5 x 7 in; 216 x 180 mm), and fiction of substantial depth, the magazine failed to take off. Few of the contributors were at all well known, apart from Bruce Boston, Adam Corbin Fusco, A R Morlan, Charles Michael Saplak and H Turnip Smith, and then only primarily in the Small Press market; the $6 cover price may also have limited sales. The magazine was barely noticed. [MA]
