Pseudonym of Scottish author and historian Robin James Adam (1924-1999), for 40 years a lecturer in medieval history at St Andrews University. His best-known novel is his first, Midge (1962; vt Doomsday, 1999 1963), a literate Post-Holocaust story in which a new form of life threatens to take over from the remnants of outmoded, destructive humanity. Further novels are the John Buchan-like Fish on a Hook (1963) and Bar Sinister (1964), the bar of the title representing a borderline-sf Communications technology. [JC]
