(1946-    ) US academic, author, editor and literary critic, a retired professor of English and comparative literature at San Diego State University, California. He began publishing essays of genre interest with "Form, Formula, and Fantasy: Generative Structures in Contemporary Fiction" in the Eaton Conference volume Bridges to Fantasy (anth 1982) edited by Eric S Rabkin, Robert Scholes and George E Slusser. With Frederick Barthelme he co-edited Mississippi Review #47/48, a special issue devoted to Cyberpunk containing both stories (mostly original) and a "Cyberpunk Forum/Symposium" of critical essays and commentary. His first solo work of specific sf interest was the Interview collection Across the Wounded Galaxies: Interviews with Contemporary American Science Fiction Writers (coll 1990). This was followed by the significant Cyberpunk/Postmodern (see Postmodernism and SF) anthology Storming the Reality Studio: A Casebook of Cyberpunk and Postmodern Science Fiction (anth 1991), assembling original and reprinted tales, poems and essays, some previously seen in the above-cited Mississippi Review #47/48. McCaffery's further anthologies Avant-Pop: Fiction for a Daydream Nation (anth 1993) and After Yesterday's Crash: The Avant-Pop Anthology (anth 1995) include sf; the term "avant-pop" has not been widely adopted.
