(1942- ) US author, almost exclusively of fiction for younger children and Young Adults. In a prolific career she has written relatively little sf. After a supernatural fantasy, Who's There? (1994), she began the Ark Trilogy, comprising to date Welcome to the Ark (1996) and Flight of the Raven (2001), initially set in an isolated Keep known as the "Ark", whose inhabitants are place there to escape a world riven with stress; four gifted children establish a gestalt there (see Hive Minds), at the risk of becoming a Pariah Elite; as the tale develops, and violence escalates, the series evolves into an activated debate on what it means to save the world as Ecological degradation intensifies, and passions mount. The sequence remains incomplete. The Face in the Mirror (1998) is fantasy. [JC]
