(? - ) US Videogame designer, teacher and author, in the latter capacity mostly of nonfantastic tales for Young Adult readers; she began to publish work of genre interest with "Sea Change" in Galaxy's Edge for September 2015. Her first novel with strong sf content is Nucleation (2020), a Hard SF Space Opera set initially at a mining installation in deep space, where the protagonist makes problematic First Contact with another civilization; Realpolitik and corporate intrigues darken her path toward career redemption. The operative who carries the action of The Extractionist (2022) must use her skills (the title is an eponym) to "rescue" a government agent seemingly trapped in a Cyberspace venue accessed by Avatars whose experiences are later downloaded; but the agent's avatar has latched on to a McGuffin which may change the world. This novel won the Philip K Dick Award in 2023. [JC]
