Pseudonym of UK businessman and author Walter Llewellyn Hughes (1910-1993) for his fiction, all Children's SF, and all restricted for many years to his Chris Godfrey/U N Exploration Agency sequence of interplanetary adventures, beginning with Blast Off at Woomera (1957; rev vt Blast Off at 0300 1958) and ending some twenty volumes later with P-K (1986). Chris Godfrey starts as a boy, but grows up and advances through the ranks of the United Nations Exploration Agency, the "organization responsible for the exploration of the Universe" – until he becomes Director; by this time the Solar System has been domesticated, and visiting Aliens become the agency's responsibility, which takes them in UFO territory, as mystifications tend to mark Extraterrestrial irruptions in later volumes of the series. From this point Chris Godfrey usually supervises younger characters, like the mechanic Tony Hale, who dominate the action of later books, including those in the subsidiary Boy Astronaut sequence for younger readers comprising Boy Astronaut (1977 chap), First Family on the Moon (1979 chap) and School on the Moon (1981 chap). Later stories also feature young protagonists, female twins with the power of Telepathy: a long way from Woomera. [JC]
