Working name of Richard Yancey (1962- ) US author, mostly of fantasy and horror, including his first two series, the Alfred Kropp sequence beginning with The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp (2005), an Arthurian fantasy set in the modern world with various Secret Masters vying over the proper use of the sword Excalibur, and the Monstrumologist sequence beginning with The Monstrumologist (2009; vt The Monstrumologist: The Terror Beneath 2009), which is horror. Of sf interest is his third series, the Young Adult 5th Wave sequence comprising The 5th Wave (2013) and The Infinite Sea (2014), which begins in medias res at some point after the first waves of Alien Invasion have separated the young protagonist from her family (her parents dead, her brother abducted); she must face living in the wild, much combat (see Military SF), and the need to avoid individual aliens, disguised as humans (see Identity; Paranoia) with orders to shoot genuine humans at sight. There is considerable action, which the second volume reprises. A final volume is projected. [JC]
