Toth, Alex

(1928-2006) Highly regarded US Comics artist active from the 1940s until his death. He studied Illustration at the New York School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design) and drew the Superhero character Green Lantern for DC Comics as early as 1947, moving on to work on The Flash, The Atom and others. Later he drew war, crime and romance tales for Standard Comics 1952-1954 and (after a period of US Army service in Tokyo) Dell Comics 1956-1960 (mostly Westerns), and Atlas/Seaboard Comics 1974-1975. Comics titles featuring Toth which have entries in this encyclopedia include Fantastic Worlds (1952-1953), Lost Worlds (1952) and The Amazing Adventures of Buster Crabbe (1953-1954). He also contributed to Gold Key Comics 1963-1975 and various Warren Publishing titles 1965-1982, the latter including some artwork for Vampirella. Later DC work included drawing Batman in a 1974 comics storyline and a 1996 cover.

Toth's breakthrough into the animation world came with Space Angel (1962-1964) for Cambria Productions, as art director. He subsequently worked for Hanna-Barbera, creating the very popular title character of Space Ghost (1966-1968; vt Space Ghost and Dino Boy). Other creations for Hanna-Barbera were the Space Ghost spinoff Dino Boy in the Lost Valley (1966-1968), Birdman and the Galaxy Trio (1967-1969) and The Herculoids (1967; vt Zandor). Later animation projects included Battle of the Planets (1978-1980) for Sandy Frank Entertainment.

Toth entered the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame/Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1991. He died still working at his drawing board. [DRL]
